PODCAST DONE BEFORE IT STARTED

I am totally wrecked right now. After two months of talking, meeting, and more talking, it turns out there will be NO podcasting for me via CBSradio.

Here's why: Content, and ON THE AIR restrictions.

After we shook hands last week and I started Twittering about it, I opened a nice surprise email bundle from CBS. It contained a copy of these documents/pamphlets.

'CBS RADIO INDECENCY POLICY

                        and

'CBS RADIO: WORDS THAT HURT AND HARM'

Only then did I realize that CBS was going to hold an OFF the AIR podcast to the same 'standards' as if it WERE being broadcast over the FCC airwaves.

The execs at CBS did tell me they didn't do their due diligence  correctly. It was only AFTER we had an agreement they 'discovered' the CBS corporate policy and let me know.

Don't get me wrong. I long to broadcast. When I walked away from my job and my paycheck a year ago, it was to get my shit together. Job done. I'm ready and eager to go back to work. However, CBSradio controls my rights until October 2010.

After deciding there was no current slot for me on their stations, we started the podcast dance. I'm quite sure that a podcast that would be edited for content and language would not exactly be what you'd want to hear. Or I'd want to do. A watered down show would be embarrassing.

It would be one thing to be held to these ridiculous standards IF I were going back to broadcast radio. But to do a podcast? No way.

I promise you IF they had mentioned this AT ALL in ANY of our conversations, I would have said no thanks. As a matter of fact, we discussed the creative luxuries podcasting provides.

I have discovered in the last year how much broadcasting means to me, and how much the people who have listened to me over the years mean to me as well.

The LAST thing I would do knowingly would be to jerk your chain about a return. The second to last thing I'd do is a half assed subjectively edited long form podcast.

So unless some other P.O.S. station in OceanCity/Salisbury comes knockin, I'm CBS's bitch until October 2010.

I am sorry for ever having publicly brought this up. I have standards, and this project just fell way below them.

Thanks for all your continued support. I'll still Twitter and blog. But today I am bummed out of my mind. I have been blessed to have been rewarded for my hard work over the years, and at this point have a desire to return that is fueled simply by my passion and love for broadcasting. And interacting with people.

Translation: I don't need the bucks (wouldn't turn down my old salary, tho). I just have loved radio for 35+ years. It's my career and my hobby. I'll get back in when the current contract situation is up. I would do almost anything to get back in.

Just not like this.

I really hope you understand and can accept my apology.

Now we're off to find a bar open at 9am!

Those corporate bastards! After saying how understanding they were of your situation, it seems that they still live to be difficult. Is there any chance that you could buy yourself out of the contract or convince another radio station or satrad to buy you out? With your kind of talent and passion, it's a shame that CBS is going to keep you quiet!

Hugely disappointing. No apology necessary - except from the dumb asses at CBS. You did the right thing. Only a toady would let a podcast be edited for "Words that Hurt and Harm" F dat. Corporations suck.

I'm sure there is a million reasons why so excuse my ignorance, but why not go the Adam Carolla route? He is under contract till 2010 so he does a podcast for free until his contract runs out.

Ain't that just a kick in the crotch! Short of you coming up with a a double-secret new alter ego and starting an underground/pirate podcast where you digitally disguise your voice to hide your identity (Rev. Lou Stool), your faithful will wait for you ride out your contract. We'll get by, and mark our calendars for 10 of 2010... the second coming!

Can you point a webcam out the window and do a "vodcast?" Then upload to youtube to "broadcast yourself."

Don, are you legally restricted from doing podcasts without CBS? Could you just do it yourself?

It's ironic: You and Mike were the reason that I had a dream of going into radio broadcasting since I was a kid listening to you all on WAVA. Since then I've done a stint with college radio, toyed with attending CBS in Crystal City and have even dabbled in some amateur internet radio. My dream: to be a radio star. Like you guys.

And now? You're one of the main reasons I thank my lucky stars that I never made a career of it. The business environment has always been a bit sleazy (as your stories over the year have proven), but nothing compares to the litigious crap you and other broadcasters have been subjected to over this decade. It's downright scary how much of a stronghold your contractual obligations have on your desire to do something which makes you happy.

I'll wait for the podcast if I have to. Kudos to you for sticking to your guns.

You know something, f^ck their rules! You should do the podcast unedited anyway. What are they going to do, fire you? Seeing as its a podcast and not subject to the FCC's puritan rules, they won't get fined, so why would they waste their time and money enforcing these stupid rules? No harm no foul!

If not, we'll keep waiting (shoot, I may have to take the month of October 2010 off to concentrate solely on listening to the show). True story--High school gf and I planned to lose the Big V on prom night. Got her back to the hotel room and...she got her period! Blood grosses me out and I couldn't go through with it. Talk about a let down and blue balls. CBS Radio, you have just topped this. Hang in their Donnie, you'll be taking care of business soon enough!

I'm all for a bit of pirate podcasting, too, and there's always something inherently attractive in sticking it to the Man. You just have to accomplish it without getting caught (:::Cue "Pump Up The Volume" theme song:::). Until then, we all know your voice so well, it's safe to say we can hear you when we read your blog. At least I know I can.

Blog away, Mike. I think you'll find you have a talent for writing as well as speaking. I have a gut feeling you do. I'm more than willing to stick around and watch it develop. I think it's gonna be a helluva ride, because, damn baby, you've managed to capture lightning in a bottle once before. You're gonna do it again.

Sorry to hear it Don. It's been bugging me for years how censored media has become. It seems like ever since Janet popped out a chocolate teat on tv everyone has become a Puritan. Sure, its a tough time right now and the economy is a mess. You would think now would be the time for companies to broaden their horizons a bit.

I'd love to be able to just do it any say Fuckem. BUT I live in the real world, and this is a corporate one at that. My release alone is 28 pages long. I agree their thoughts on Internet content is beyond wrong, but IF I were to just "do it", I'd be in court so fast your head would spin. Add on lawyering fees, too. It's what it is. Thanks tho, for the kind words. I'll hang in there, you do too.

And, yes it seems unfair that CBS would just decide to plant me on the bench while they doll out millions to other talent they got rid of (Dahl, Leykis, Corolla) to sit out. But life isn't fair. CBS has helped me again learn THAT lesson.

By the way...Brian Wilson only has four concert dates scheduled this year, all in October -- three in New Jersey and one in Glenside, PA.

I'm bummed for you, Don and for the entertainment we're now going to miss out on because CBS can't pull their heads out of their asses.

Why does CBS allow Carolla to do an uncensored podcast?

They can't find room for a radio legend in the market he became famous in? Are they high? Do they just enjoy reveling in their mediocre ratings?

Terrestial radio really does have a death wish these days, with their 'let's get rid of original talent and turn our stations into generic ipods mentality.

I'll eagerly await 10/10 and enjoy the blogs and twitters until then. Good day sir!

Radio will NEVER be the same as I remember it as a child through Don's leaving. Too much corporate BS. Radio used to be like the wild west. Now with all the cookie cutter shows and all the "research" about what we the listener truly want to hear is a joke. iPods and the like is what we all listen to know. I will return to listening to the airwaves when Don returns to broadcasting on them. And oddly enough, this is the business I long to be in. Vomit voice and all. Thanks for the opportunity to keep in touch here and on Twitter. Good luck to you and Janet, and I look forward to your triumphant return to the "peoples" airwaves. What I don't get is: people swear on Podcasts all the freaking time. To name one: Dan Savage. How can a Podcast and a live, over-the-air radio show be held to the same standards? So completely unfair. Wrecked my whole week. I was SO looking forward to hearing you again, Don! I guess I'll have to read your tweets and blogs and use my imagination for the voice. :-( Keep hanging in there!!! We'll be patiently waiting for TPTB at CBS to pull their heads out of their collective ass. (But I'm really not very patient!)
