Dave Hughes/dcrtv.com AN OPEN LETTER

I'm going to attempt to keep this brief, as the topic is not one I want to discuss openly, but have to.

FACTS:
In 2006 I received a letter, in the mail, at my home, from a deranged fan of my radio show.
My family and I had dealt with him and his issues for well over 10 years prior to the letter that prompted the involvement of the police.
The letter opened with, "YOU HAVE ONLY YOURSELF TO BLAME FOR WHAT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN!"
In the letter, he threatened to, "Kill you, or your girlfriend, or your son." He also said, "You will never be able to open a piece of mail without wondering if I have sent you something. Any time a delivery truck or someone comes to your front door, you'd better be worried. It might be me."
He continued, "Over the next 10 years, I will make you think about me and what I might or might not do every  waking moment."
It continued, but you certainly get the gist. He even threatened to poison my dogs.

I called the Fairfax County, Virginia police and met with detectives. They told me they would investigate, then followed up and said there was enough to prosecute, so I did.
This lunatic topped off years of various forms of delusion and harassment, in regard to me and my radio show.
When he literally threatened the lives of my family, I did what any of you would have done.
He was found guilty and sentenced to a jail term and supervised probation, with other provisions.

When this incident happened, I only spoke of it ONCE on the air (less than thirty seconds total), after I was spotted in the courtroom the day of sentencing, and I wasn't on the air. I mentioned NO particulars, and moved on.
At that same time, Dave Hughes (webmaster of dcrtv.com, a radio gossip site) contacted me and said he'd heard about the threat. I asked he keep it under wraps, and he did. I appreciated it, and let him know.

Four months ago, the man got out of jail. One of the first things he did was to write a note to dcrtv.com, claiming the cops involved were somehow against him, and I unfairly accused him of the crime, stating he had a medical condition that excused his behavior and actions.

The rantings of a madman.

I contacted Mr. Hughes, and told him EXACTLY how serious the threat was to me and my family, and he agreed that the topic, and the man's post should be edited out.
Shortly afterward, it continued.
Not understanding why this would be troubling to me, he informed me it was a "judgement call" and he was going to let it go.
I severed any communication with him at that point.

The man who went to jail died about a week ago. His sister and brother penned their own diatribes to dcrtv.com, blaming me for their brother's death, citing an illness that made it impossible for him to understand conversation. And stating I should have simply snapped my fingers and made it so he wouldn't go to jail for his crime.

Those two are obviously wrong and I pity them. Dave Hughes posts this crap, even though it clearly has no place in his radio/tv website. It has no place because it was a crime, and my family and I were the victims. It was never front page, or back page news in the Washington Post or anywhere else. The only place it was "news" was on dcrtv.com.
And for a few weeks, it's been a topic of deliberation in a 'mailbag' moderated by him.
I would be writing nothing at all about this, if Mr. Hughes wasn't continuing his "coverage". Which incidentally, never even involved a call or Email to me for my position. He certainly knows how to get a hold of me, as just this weekend he sent me a note on Twitter referencing a trip to New York I recently took. Like we're good old buddies. Quite the contrary.

I ask anyone reading this:

If someone threatened your family with death, and was prosecuted and found guilty, how would YOU feel if some scumbag was digging it all up and presenting a point of view that's not only wrong, but bordering on outright slander?

I committed no crime against the stalker. It was he who violated my family.

Who would possibly want any of this very private and troubling news made public?

The stalker was obviously troubled and had mental issues. I really don't know what Dave Hughes's problem is.

Simple civility and morality would say, "No."
Yet he still says, "Yes."

Hell has a special place for both of the men I have written about this evening.

D-- I had heard rumors that one of the radio groupies from the D&M show had given you a few problems a few years back, but I had no idea it had gone so flipping far. Jaysus! How did you let your loved ones out of your sight while it was all happening? I would've been sick with worry.
Some one was kind enough to clue me in on who you were referring to. Part of me isn't surprised as he always seemed a bit troubled & out of step with the rest of the world. And the word "fan" does come from "fanatical."
Guess it's always a surprise what darkness lurks in a soul. I read the odd note he wrote when he posted his guitar video of "In My Room" on YouTube. In spite of the grief he caused, watching it made me pity him. You did what you had to. DCRTV.com, or DickTV.com as I always read it, isn't worth your time. Block the bastard, if you haven't already. I wouldn't waste any more bandwith trying to explain.

Doni - I've had a stalker. As shocking as that is I have. i know what you mean and how terrifying it can be. I had no idea this bastard had passed but then again I was chased out of message boards devoted to your greatness for various reasons and hope to god you never have to deal with such insanity again.

I'm sure your threat is still on the table if Rupert's antics continue. Yes, the guy is an ass. Deserves any sort of criticism he can get.

Of course, he decided to post your @ to him and question it on the site. What a douche.

Good riddance to the criminal I say. This probably happens often with celebrities. I hear all kinds of crazy stories from friends in known bands but nothing life-threatening. I would have sent the bastard to jail too, you did the right thing.

It's pretty crass of DCRTV to allow his siblings to try and defend the nutcase, who are most likely nuts themselves.

Don, I'm really sorry you had to go through that. I understand you're in a unique position to encounter a lot of people who aren't capable of logically seeing simple truths in situations, but you can rest assured that most of us understand you've done nothing wrong. Please don't worry that people will misconstrue your intentions, or think you had some other, better choices. I understand, and I'm sure most others do, too.

The VA Tech killer had parents, and they thought he was harmless - he was just confused, and eventually he would get better with some guidance and time. Because they were so close to the situation (and due to their own moronic wishful thinking) a lot of people paid for their mistakes. Yes, everyone is responsible for their own actions, but when someone has an illness to that magnitude it is the family's responsibility to treat that illness. When my parents are very old they will need me to take care of them, to make sure they are safe and to make sure they don't harm anyone on accident. This isn't completely different from that scenario. His family failed him, no one else, and you were made a victim of that negligence. The problem with being crazy is that you can't rationalize what they can and can't do, no matter how close you are to them: they will surprise you one way or another. Total nutjobs should always have legal guardians, period, and cannot be treated like normal independent adults. It pisses me off that the stalker's family feels that way about you. If anything, they should feel guilty for not taking care of their moral and legal obligations. They have no idea what kind of stress you've had to deal with, with all of those possibilities always in the back of your mind. ...at least he's no longer a threat to you or your family anymore. I hope you can sleep better at night.

Dave is just like a lot of others in the media...a douchebag who will always go with whatever helps his career the most, no matter what. He probably thinks attention is actually good for him.

A stalker who makes death threats has to be dealt with. In today's society, that means calling the police and taking legal steps to protect oneself and one's family. To have done otherwise would have been irresponsible and reckless.

Should Don have accepted an apology from the stalker? Some people might have. Many others wouldn't have.

Then we move into "what ifs?" What if the stalker hadn't been fired? (I could understand an employer being uncomfortable with an employee who had stalked and made death threats against others...regardless of whether the stalker was conviced.) An employer has a responsibility to himself, his company, and his other employees, too.

According to reports, the stalker had an asthma attack and went to the hospital's emergency department on a Wednesday and was discharged on Friday. At 5 am Saturday morning--less than a day after discharge--he had another asthma attack. Why don't we take a look at the medical treatment he did--and perhaps did not--receive?

As for DCRTV, giving the stalker a platform for continued rants (which in retrospect suggests that any apology he might have offered wouldn't have been sincere--thereby supporting Don's actions at the time) was like (to use an old cliche) pouring gasoline on a fire. There was little to be gained from providing the platform, and much (including lives) to be lost. There's even less to be gained now.

Like you haven't been through enough. This might be apples to oranges, but an insane out of control driver drove up on the sidewalk in front of my house killing my only Son, (8yrs old)...because he was unable to get his meds from the local mental facility.
As stated before, listened for years at KHTK, still trying to find your brodcast here in kelseyville, John A.

Thats BS, I heqard you since Chicago on WLS, it's too bad sick and or crazy people can do that. It's not your fault, you did the right thing.
If the family knew he was unstable they should have stepped up and not just to the mic after it happened.
Life comes around once, I loved your show, but your debt is too your son and family. Not to us listeners...........

Good Lord, I had no idea that this happened to you and your family. For DCRTV to include the death of this person and his family's response as "news" is beyond repulsive. As a former police officer who has had to deal with many people with psychologically disturbed people, I can recognize that the "stalker" had obvious mental problems. However, you and your family were and are victims. Period. It is incumbent on his family for him to have treatment which obviously didn't happen and now they want to place blame on the victim. That to me is the real sick twist. While I miss hearing you on the DC airwaves, be thankful that you can put that behind you.

Hey Don,
I just wrote that douche a nice little letter that I hope he puts in his "mailbag." I have a political blog, and let me tell you; I have all sorts of discretion when it comes to posting comments, and I use it. Being a political blog, you have no idea how many comments I've forwarded to the authorities. Plus, I've been stalked before, including one guy who threatened me and my then 6-year-old son. Came to find out the guy had the means, being an ex-cop, and the will. The danger here is that some other deluded asshole will find out about the previous guy, and try to mimic it. Hughes needs to understand that. Did you know that pretty much all media in the Baltimore/Washington area are under a standing order to NEVER report on bomb threats that it gets? The reason is that reporting on them makes for more bomb threats. Imagine that...

Just take care, dude... if you read the "Mailbag," you mostly have support. You're right, he's wrong...

Hi Doni... you asked so here I go...
I ask anyone reading this:

If someone threatened your family with death, and was prosecuted and found guilty, how would YOU feel if some scumbag was digging it all up and presenting a point of view that's not only wrong, but bordering on outright slander?

I say... I would want it dropped, left alone, and hope everyone forgot about it - even though I NEVER could forget.

Who would possibly want any of this very private and troubling news made public?

I say... Nobody who could even imaging your feelings and those of your loved ones.

The stalker was obviously troubled and had mental issues. I really don't know what Dave Hughes's problem is.

Simple civility and morality would say, "No."
Yet he still says, "Yes."

Hell has a special place for both of the men I have written about this evening.

I say... I agree about a special place in hell. You can still count me as a serious "fan" as I remember the 30 seconds you discussed it on the air, and I figured out some details all on my own... I would never have used that knowledge, or even shared my "guesses" on any message boards at the time.... Some things are honestly serious and don't need to be shared/drug out in the media, when people's private lives are at stake. Sorry you have to relive this, but not too sorry the threat is gone. regards from a fan in Wichita!
