CLEARING UP THE PODCAST

I have read quite a few very nice Twitter notes about exactly why I'm not doing a podcast with CBS, and why I didn't cave to their rules&regs.

It's simple, like I told them. It's more than the big seven dirties. I told them repeatedly there was no problem avoiding s***,f***, etc. I did that for years on the air.

BUT. When I'm the one trying to return, making a "deal" with no upside (finances? a proposed 50/50 split of any profits)...and just an offer from them to, "Try it for 90 days and we'll see where we are" was a bit too vague for me. Especially with the restrictions that wanted to add on. But I digress. This content issue wasn't about Carlin's Seven.

My problem was...wait for it...subjective content that is classified as "edgy" or "words that can hurt". A topic as mundane as going to the doctor would be subject to a third party's understanding of the very grey FCC rules (that DO NOT APPLY to internet content).

I would record a show, in theory, and send it to CBS. There, they'd examine and listen to it, cut out whatever they thought was verbotten, and run the rest slapped together.

I'd be relying on a toady to decide what's appropriate. That's worse than doing a live show, and having someone hitting a delay button repeatedly.

I know some of you are upset I didn't just go through with it. That's MY fault for talking about it before it started.

You can think whatever you like of me and this failed venture, it's your God given right. I think you'd be unhappy with the end product, and I'd be embarrassed by it.

I'd be glad to discuss any other specifics, but this seems to be the number one topic, 24 hours later.

Hope this helps you understand, and if you're still mad, PissOff! :)

LarryKing - "Hey there, boy."

I'm with you, plain and simple. You are the one making the content, and I've enjoyed it for years. I understand that I've enjoyed it because of the best decisions you've made, not despite them. I'd rather have to wait, and then end up enjoying listening to what you intend to put out, then listen to something all chopped up and wonder what you were thinking.

Thanks for the blog and the twitter.

No, dude, you were right... they were setting it yp for failure - just better to wait for 10/10 - we'll be here... given that it is the net and they STILL wanted to put you under these constraints tells you they were never serious about it... let the countdown begin!

I don't blame you. Those restrictions are frankly insulting and you were right to walk away. Us real fans will be waiting patiently for your return.

I echo the above... this should be pretty simple: you've proven yourself and earned the right to be the final arbiter of what gets cut or not, especially when it comes to a podcast (where the FCC has no regulatory power, and there should be no risk whatsoever to CBS).

Not sure why people are in a tizzy over being led on by you, or whatever. Those folks need a job, hobby, or lobotomy. Hopefully, you won't feel the need to keep using this space to explain this decision... move on to more entertaining blogging!

Thanks for many, many years of great entertainment. Looking forward to reading your thoughts here, and - if you decide to return in 2010 - your new program.

And finally - any good nazi will tell you the correct spelling is "verboten."

I think a lot of people saying they would listen to the "edited" version are like crack heads. They are desperate for a hit but as soon as they heard it they would be complaining about the trash you tried to pass off. I saw this on an episode of "The Wire" so I know it happens.

"words that can hurt" = no podcast. Thanks CBS for being dicks. How does "Two and a Half Men" get away with it?

CBS couldn't turn a buck on Don doin a podcast is I believe the real reason here for them not letting him do it. All other reasons are them blowing smoke. How's that for words that can hurt,CBS?

DONI, Most of us are totally content to let you drive the bus, but we're... CURIOUS. Are you contractually prevented from a DIY (not DOT) podcast in the manner of Carolla? I'll hang up and listen for the answer.

It has been said many times before me, but I do want to lend my "voice" of support. If it doesn't feel right to you, then I'm sure we will all wait until the right time comes. We aren't going anywhere. Looking forward to your return.

Don, I think you hit the nail right on the head - CBS apparently still doesn't get why people have grown frustrated with radio. This goes hand-in-hand with what I'd messaged you about a few months ago. In all of this nonsense is a serious academic white paper just waiting to come out--somebody needs to lay out just what the forces are that are killing radio in America, starting with a government-driven content restriction policy that stifles innovation and risk-taking, and thus effectively destroys any hope for entrepreneurship in radio today.

Seriously???
I had no idea CBS was that screwed up. No WONDER you told them to pack sand. You did exactly the right thing. You mind if we print up some 10/10 t-shirts while we wait? It'll be like waiting for Christmas.

I think you did the right thing. The real deal will come around and when it does, grab it.

I can wait...but I can't wait. Know what I mean?

The way the article at radio-info.com is written, I am led to believe that you actually finalized at least one podcast. They wrote, "Recently he launched a podcast that used some salty language, but he figured it was okay since it wasn’t over the air." Is this correct and that I missed it? The article does credit Rupert as a source, so I don't belive they know what they are talking about. I just need to confirm for myself.

Thank you for 15 years of entertainment here in Sacramento.

CBS wants to dull your edge and play big brother. You're right to pass on the 'opportunity' and wait. We'll be here, DG, have no fear. You're worth the wait!

Since the corporate bastards have silenced you again, I hope you keep working on your book. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the state of radio today as well as all of the stories you couldn't tell us on air.

So, let's get this straight: You, a financially secure natural talent on hiatus, asked the management of a financially failing industry if you might be able to do that which you just love to do, and at the same time help them make some coin, which, given your talent, would be assured; and they, being premier fucking talent when it comes to managing said failing industry, decided that they knew what was best, because, you know, they've managed things so fucking spectacularly so far . . . aw, bloody hell! We, gentle listeners, are completely fucked until 10/10. To quote the great, not so late, Susan Powter: "STOP THE INSANITY" CBS FUCKNUTS ! ! ! ! !

Thus ends the blogcast comment day, TTFN.

100% in support of your decision to not do the podcast under these circumstances. I would much rather wait another year to hear a true podcast from you, instead of a chopped up, heavily censored, sloppily edited CBS abomination.
